Conservatives complain there is an attack on white men. There are various themes to this complaint sometimes expressed as an attack on white evangelical men or straight white men, but it is still the same complaint. The shadowy attackers seem to be the liberal left or woke brain disease. However, the supposed protagonists don’t fit that role. The liberal left and those with woke brain disease share the same percentage of white men that the conservative movement contains. This is an imaginary movement invented by the right.
An actual attack on white maleness of such a huge proportion must originate from people with resources to support this huge venture. Also, an attack of this size must have political clout behind it to succeed, lots of clout.
So, who has the resources to be taking down white men? Where are the financial resources to support such an assault? Does this invisible non-white male force have the financial resources to move legislation to cancel straight white men? Where are the resources actually? Of the 400 members of the Forbes 400, fifty-eight are women (2022 statistics). The best I can ascertain 15 of those 400 billionaires are non-white (8 of them are Americans and two are women). I found seven members of the Forbes 400 who identified as members of the LGBTQ+ community. That’s .4% of the total on the list of the richest people in the world.
According to these numbers the funding needed to support a movement to cancel white men is overwhelmingly in the hands of white straight men. The funding needed to launch an assault on white men from non-white groups is indeed in short supply. In a pitched battle the dollars in the hands of white men are far greater than those available to somehow finance a movement to cancel white male’s status in this country.
Well, the second means to marginalize a group of people is through government legislation. Let’s see what the possibilities are in this sector of our society.
The Vice President of the United States is a black woman. She is the first female of any skin hue to hold the position in our 247 years. She isn’t much of a threat to the white male exceptionalism in our country. But what does the rest of our elected population look like?
“White men represent 30% of the population but 62% of officeholders, dominating both chambers of Congress, 42 state legislatures and statewide roles across the nation… By contrast, women and people of color constitute 51% and 40% of the US population respectively, but just 31% and 13% of officeholders, according to the research by the Reflective Democracy Campaign…”
Once again, the political sector of our country is also overrepresented by white men who make the rules that keep white men in control of the government’s levers of power.
No one has the funding or political power to remove white men from their position of exceptionalism. White men are a minority in this country, yet they still pull the levers of power and control the flow of money. We have a situation where a minority continues to marginalize the majority and that reality has changed very little since the founding of the country. Powerful white men continue to prevent women and non-white men from reaching their full potential by squashing opportunities for education, employment, housing, and voting to those who do not pass the test of being white, straight, and male.
When an event occurs that looks like a threat to white male privilege, white men go on the attack to strengthen the chains that hold back the rest of society. The current white male aggression springs from the election of a black man to the White House. White males were feeling very secure in their privileged place until society’s majority elected a black president.
The white male machine went into overdrive after we elected Barak Obama. Their first goal was to ensure the black guy didn’t succeed. When that failed, they packed the supreme court with two white guys and a white woman who preaches submission to white men. At the same time white men in power began to attack voting rights, civil rights, women’s rights, and Diversity, Inclusion and Equality efforts that might open doors for non-white men to step out of the margins of society. To reinforce their legal efforts the white men began a campaign claiming men have been emasculated by the ideals of respect, compromise, inclusion, and unity. Their idea of a man, one who is boorish, abusive, dictatorial, obnoxious and a bully, had to be revived to protect the white male exceptionalism at the top of the food chain.
No, white men are not being canceled by non-white society. Non-white society, the majority, is simply trying to move out of the margins and share in the promises of freedom and equality in America.
See you next time.
