Have you heard of Joey Chestnut or Takeru Kobayashi or Sonya Thomas a.k.a. “The Black Widow”? These guys and gal are famous, or infamous depending on your perspective, champions. If you are a fan of ESPN’s annual coverage of Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island, New York you will recognize these three as champion hot dog eaters.
You can read more about some of the controversy surrounding the two guys, especially Takeru by checking out Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest. But, for our purposes here just know that these three eat a whole lot of hot dogs.
Ninety-eight pound (not a misprint) Sonya is the number four competitive eater in the United States. Her nickname “The Black Widow” refers to her ability to regularly defeat men four to five times her size. In 2012 at Nathan’s she set a US record by eating 45 (Not a misprint) hot dogs breaking her old record of 40 (Not a misprint).
Takeru has held and/or still holds records for:
Number of hot dogs eaten: 110 in ten minutes at the New York State Fairgrounds
Number of Bun-less hot dogs eaten: 60 in 2 minutes and 35 seconds at the Texas State Fair
Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest: 69 hot dogs (Not a misprint) in 10 minutes (2011).
Joey “Jaws” Chestnut is currently the number one competitive eater according to “The International Federation of Competitive Eating” (Yes there are rules!)
He has won Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest eight years in a row (Not a misprint)
Joey, Sonya and Takeru eat other things competitively too like; hard boiled eggs, wings, ribs, asparagus, cheese cake-you get the idea.
Ah! The joy of eating hot dogs!
See you next time.
